Molly is a wizard-in-training under the teaching of Harry Dresden. She is highly sensitive to magic being used around her, thus negating her combat potential. However, her ability to manipulate minds is impressive as well as innate, without training she altered a few of her friends’ thoughts (resulting in her breaking one of the seven laws of magic and being placed under the Doom of Damocles). Her major strength, however, is veiling. This ability is described canonically as better than Harry himself, as well as a few of the wardens. However, as she is still in training, she is still learning much of the basics, as well as endurance. |
Molly appears a couple of times in earlier Dresden novels, but her character isn't really fleshed out until Proven Guilty. After running away from home (the latest step in a series of rebellions against her mother and household) Molly calls on Harry to bail her out of jail. She tricks him, however, it turns out her boyfriend, Nelson, is the one under arrest and Molly asks Harry to help clear him of his charges. Harry at first refuses but bails out her boyfriend Nelson as long as she agreed to let Harry decide what to do next afterwards. They find out that Nelson was arrested for assault which he says he had not done. Nelson was arrested because he was, seemingly, the only person around. He bails Nelson out, then takes Molly home, only to realize that she had run away from home. Molly refuses to stay with her parents and ends up leaving with Harry to return to SplatterCon (where the assault had taken place). An attack happens at the convention and Molly realizes that one of her friends is involved. Harry takes a look with the Sight and reveals that friend has been psychically attacked as well as physically. Harry finds the things doing the attack (phages) and realizes too late that his spell to defend, sends them directly at Molly. The phages attack the Carpenter home and take Molly into the heart of Faery Winter, the fortress Arctis Tor. She is rescued by Harry and her mother Charity. And Harry explains to her what happened to her friends and Molly realizes that in an honest and naive attempt to help them (cure their drug and alcohol addictions, etc) she has damaged their minds and spirits. Molly decides give herself to the White Council. The meeting is set up and only two of the Senior Council can make it to the meeting. The Merlin and The Gatekeeper which does not go well. The Merlin votes to have Molly excute right there and then. Harry stalls them by telling them to let the Gatekeeper vote. Which at that time the Gatekeeper opens the door and lets Listen-to-Winds, Eb McCoy, and Martha Liberty in who are attack by Outsiders. They also have Micheal with them. They vote not the excute Molly and she becomes Molly apprentice. Harry and Molly are put under the Doom of Damocles. Harry makes Molly to live with her parents which she isn't happy. As Harry's apprentice, Molly has to learn the basics, though, because of her innate veiling ability and restlessness, she doesn't want to. However, Harry, in a rather serious and frightening moment, shows Molly that she needs the basics because she can't defend herself quite yet from things such as a flaming ball inching it's way towards her. She begins to show her maturity when, at the beginning of Small Favors, when Harry and the Carpenters are attacked by Gruffs, she grabs her younger siblings and veils them. It is mentioned that she has a small desk as a studyspace in Harry's sub basement, as well. |
